The native desktop app — what it replaces
Until v0.16, running Hermes meant keeping a terminal window open and managing the process yourself. The new desktop app replaces that with a proper GUI — one-click install, in-app self-update, and Hermes running like any other application on macOS, Linux or Windows. You get drag-and-drop file input (hand the agent a document without any commands), an inline model picker in the status bar so you can switch mid-session, and concurrent multi-profile support.
Multiple profiles with separate system prompts and skill sets can run at the same time without interfering with each other.
The remote gateway — the team use case
The remote gateway is the more structurally useful addition for teams. A desktop install can now connect to a Hermes instance running on a server or cloud host, authenticated via OAuth or a username and password. In practice: one organisation runs a central Hermes instance on its own infrastructure, and individual team members connect to it from their own machines.
Shared memory, shared skill library, central management. That's a different capability from a local-only install, and it's the foundation for proper multi-user deployments.
Web admin panel — what it manages
The browser-based admin panel covers what previously required direct config file edits: messaging channel connections (Telegram, Slack, Discord), the MCP catalogue, stored credentials, and webhook configurations. It's not a full enterprise settings screen, but it handles the things most teams change regularly without needing to touch the command line.
The quieter changes that matter
V0.16 also adds a fuzzy model picker across every interface — type a partial model name and it finds the closest match rather than requiring exact strings. The /undo [N] command reverses the last N turns in a conversation. Default skills have been pruned: redundant ones are gone, niche ones are optional rather than installed by default. NVIDIA's skill collection is now a trusted source in the Skills Hub. New users can start chatting through Nous Portal's Quick Setup in under a minute.
Worth noting: the release involved 874 commits, 542 merged PRs and 399 closed issues — 16 of them security-tagged.
Whether to update now or wait
V0.16 is a substantial release, not a small patch. For personal setups or evaluation, update now — the native app alone is worth it. For production deployments with teams depending on a stable Hermes config, give it a week. Early reports suggest the core is solid, but any release this size will have edge cases.
